READ somewhere that dogs are really wolves, or that they evolved from such feared animals.
Before humans cared for cats and other domestic pets, they had dogs as their favorite companion. I myself care for a number of dogs of varying sizes and breeds at home.
According to one site, “Scientists have come up with a broad picture of the origins of dogs. First off, researchers agree that they evolved from ancient wolves. Scientists once thought that some visionary hunter-gatherer nabbed a wolf puppy from its den one day and started raising tamer and tamer wolves, taking the first steps on the long road to leashes and flea collars. This is oversimplified, of course, but the essence of the idea is that people actively bred wolves to become dogs just the way they now breed dogs to be tiny or large, or to herd sheep.’’
A story in “The New York Times” recently stated that of the estimated one billion dogs in the world, only a quarter of them are pets. The vast majority of dogs run free in villages, scavenge food at dumps.
“They are sometimes friendly, but not really friends.’’
The story goes that 750 million dogs in the world today are living on their own. They fend for themselves in harsh conditions and bad weather.

Today’s dogs are a lot different from wolves.
Dogs are less conscious of the presence of humans when they eat.
They eat comfortably in the presence of people. They do not live in groups or packs.
While dogs have been found to be somewhat related to wolves, there are no strict scientific studies pointing to this.
Dogs belong to the taxonomic family Canidae (canines) which is divided into two tribes: those related to wolves (Canini) and those related to foxes (Vulpini). (With quotes from http://quatr.us/economy/dogs.htm)
