Sen. Cynthia A. Villar has vowed to pursue legislation aimed at balancing the Philippine’s need to increase marine life production and the need to sustain biodiversity of the country’s marine waters in the 17th Congress.
Villar, current chairperson of the Senate Committee on Agriculture and Food, said she has a greater appreciation of the importance of protecting the country’s marine environment, noting there is a huge link between marine protection to agriculture sector and future food security.
“We know that farming and fishing or the fisheries sector make up the bulk of our agriculture sector. The Philippines being an agriculture country, so it is important that we have a steady or sustainable supply and sources of food – vegetables, livestock, and fishes,” said Villar in her speech during the recent Philippine Coast Guard Auxiliary 32nd National Convention.
