Solicitor General Jose Calida has turned the tables against Sen. Leila M. de Lima who has been asking for an investigation on the killing of illegal drug suspects, vowing to launch a probe on the alleged proliferation of drugs at the National Bilibid Prisons in Muntinlupa City during her term as Justice Secretary.
As the country’s Solicitor General, Calida stressed that his office has the power to conduct investigation even on a senator like De Lima.
“Remember I am a tribune, I have the power,” Calida told reporters in an interview in Camp Crame in Quezon City.
The investigation, according to Calida, could lead to the filing of appropriate charges before the court. “We will.
The investigation leading to the filing of cases in court… We are studying it carefully,” Calida said.
De Lima has vowed a Senate investigation on the killings of drug pushers and users that have reached more than 100 since the victory of President Duterte was assured a few days after the elections.
De Lima said that she would not be intimidated in her quest for an investigation.
“I am wondering why there is such a reaction. If they are confident that everything was above board, that they followed the laws, the Constitution and current guidelines, why such a reaction?’’ De Lima said during a press briefing at the Senate.
“I will push for my proposal to conduct a Senate inquiry unless majority of my colleagues overrule, what can I do?’’
she asked. (with Mario B. Casayuran) (AARON B. RECUENCO)
