Golfer Angelo Que has opted not to carry the Philippine flag in the Rio Olympics, citing the Zika Virus as main reason, the same justification mentioned by the game’s top guns as excuse for skipping the Aug. 5 to 21 sportsfest.
“It is with deep regret to announce my decision to withdraw from the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro,” Que, 37, said in a letter addressed to the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC).
Que, rated No. 55 in the Olympic Golf Rankings and a shoo-in as only the top 60 will make the cut, pointed to several factors but singled out his “concern on the Zika Virus” as the biggest factor.
With Que’s decision not to play in Rio, only the promising Miguel Tabuena (ranked 37th) will represent the Philippines. (NG)
