The Philippine National Police-Special Action Force made a surprise search operation inside the New Bilibid Prison maximum security compound in Muntinlupa City to get rid of drugs and other contrabands from inmates yesterday.
Visitors were barred by prison authorities from seeing their loved ones in the NBP when the search operations began at 9 a.m.
This is the second “Oplan: Galugad” operation since the PNP-SAF took over the NBP last July 20 and raided the NBP Building 14, which houses the alleged drug lords and Very Important Prisoners.
PNP-SAF director Chief Supt. Benjamin Lusad said the raid covered a wide area of the maximum security compound and could last until the night.
Media was barred from entering the NBP administration building as the search was ongoing.
Outside the NBP main building, hundreds of visitors, many of whom came from the provinces, were surprised by the sudden decision of the Bureau of Corrections to bar them from entering the prison facility.
Several of them cried when they heard rumors that during the search, maximum security prisoners were told to strip down and were doused with water and made to stay under the sun. (Jonathan M. Hicap)
