President Duterte will not be accepting invitations to engagements in Metro Manila anytime soon.
In an open letter the Filipino people read by Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella over the weekend, Duterte cited the traffic problem as reason for his decision to decline invitations from individuals, organizations, and institutions in Metro Manila to be the guest of honor in their events.
Duterte sees that the protocol and security measures of his travels would further create traffic congestion and unnecessary stress and inconvenience to those who will be affected.
“While I consider it a privilege and responsibility to be in touch with the people, I have had to again and again decline for a very simple reason: As President, my travels always include protocols and security measures which create traffic congestion and disturb the flow of everyday lives and activities,” Duterte said in his letter.
“As it is, we are still being burdened with traffic issues in the Metro Manila area. It seems only prudent and sensible not to add unnecessary stress to our efforts of creating comfortable lives that include all,” he added.
The President then extended his deepest apologies and assured that the nation and his fellow Filipinos continue to be the best intentions in his heart.
“Until such time that we effectively addressed these matters, please understand that I may need to decline your warm and respectful invitations. My deepest apologies. But please bear in mind that I have only your, the people’s, and the nation’s best intentions at heart,” he said. (Elena L. Aben)
