Standard Insurance-Navy pounced on the erratic plays of a young Amy’s side to pull off a 25-17, 25-9, 25-14 win Sunday in the 2016 Philippine Superliga (PSL) All-Filipino Conference women’s volleyball tournament yesterday at the FilOil Flying V Center in San Juan.
Pau Soriano led the charge, but it was a total team effort for the Corvettes, who are eyeing fifth place after falling short of making the semifinals of this prestigious club tourney bankrolled by KLab Cyscorpions, Mueller, Mikasa and Asics with TV5 as broadcast partner.
Soriano, a former Adamson star in the UAAP, nailed 11 kills and a pair of aces to finish with a game-high 13 points while Florence Madulid and Lilet Mabbayad chipped in nine and seven points, respectively, for Standard Insurance-Navy, which punched its first win in the single-round classification battle for fifth to eighth places.
“Everybody’s motivated and played their best,” said Standard Insurance-Navy coach Nene Chavez, a proud member of the fabled national team that won the gold medal in the 1993 Southeast Asian Games in Singapore.
“Now that we have no chance of winning the title, we’re eyeing the best possible finish which is fifth place. This will be a good achievement because this is our first time to join (the PSL).”
