Some 78 overstaying and undocumented Vietnamese have surrendered to the Bureau of Immigration and asked to be voluntarily deported to their country.
Immigration Commissioner Jaime Morente disclosed that the aliens turned themselves in last week and were assisted by consuls from the Vietnamese Embassy in Manila.
“We will deport them for being indigent aliens,” Morente said, adding that a declaration of indigency will be issued against the Vietnamese by the BI board of commissioners before they are ordered to leave the country.
Morente urged other overstaying aliens to emulate and follow the example of the Vietnamese who voluntarily surfaced to avoid arrest and detention by immigration authorities. (Jun Ramirez)
