PBA Commissioner Chito Narvasa has penalized Alaska forward Calvin Abueva a one-game suspension and a P22,000 fine yesterday following his unsportsmanlike action in a game against Barangay Ginebra San Miguel in the season-ending PBA Governors’ Cup.
The 6-foot-2 Abueva planted an elbow on to the face of Ginebra’s Chris Ellis – a second motion – as the two players scrambled for loose ball early in the final frame of the game, which Alaska won in overtime, 109-100.
The three referees missed the cheap shot by Abueva as he was trying to get up, although replays showed a clear hit by the Alaska player last Sunday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
The game was reviewed yesterday by the Commissioner’s Office.
It was the first game of Abueva this conference after he was given a rest in their opening game against Meralco last week. The Best Player of the Conference in the last Commissioner’s Cup, Abueva finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds with three assists, a steal and a shot block.
Abueva will miss Alaska’s game opposite TNT Katropa on Friday at the Ynares Sports Center in Antipolo City.
