Win vs Petron to allow Tornadoes to tie F2 Logistics.
Foton tries to strengthen its bid for the top seed in the semifinals when it clashes with Petron today in the second round of the Philippine Superliga All-Filipino Conference at The Arena in San Juan City.
A victory for the Tornadoes in their 6:30 p.m. confrontation with the Tri-Activ Spikers would earn them their second win in the round and tie them with the F2 Logistics Cargo Movers on top of the leaderboard.
Fresh from a hard-earned 18-25, 25-15, 25-17, 23-25, 15-9 triumph over powerhouse RC Cola-Army two days back, Foton is expected to display the same kind of intensity to fortify its campaign for the No. 1 seat in the crucial crossover semis.
The top team in Group A will clash with the fourth seed while the second seed will battle the third seed in the knockout round.
“We need to focus on our games and not allow ourselves to relax a bit because every match is important,” said Foton coach Villet Ponce-De Leon.
Ponce-De Leon will rely anew on their strong offense after Jaja Santiago and Cherry Rondina fired 19 points anew against RC Cola.
The Tornadoes boast of a rock-solid defense, as well, with Santiago also providing a tough wall behind the net along with Maika Ortiz by conspiring with nine of the team’s 10 blocks the last time.
Petron, however, would not be easily intimidated with coach George Pascua parading with Bernadeth Pons, Aiza Maizo Pontillas and Mina Aganon.
Nursing a 25-20, 23-25, 22-25, 25-18, 15-8 loss to F2 Logistics last Thursday, Petron wants nothing more than to get back on track its own bid in the semis.
In other matches, Amy’s Kitchen and Generika meet in the 2:30 p.m. curtainraiser, followed by the 4:30 p.m.
confrontation between Cignal and Standard Insurance-Navy.
