Far Eastern overwhelms St. Benilde.
Far Eastern University sent a strong message in its title bid yesterday as it pummeled College of St. Benilde, 25-16, 25-16, 25-18, in the Shakey’s V-League Collegiate Conference at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.
The Lady Tams, who finished third last year, displayed their strong form at the attack zone with Bernadeth Pons bannering the charge for the team’s first win in the conference.
Pons hammered eight kills to finish with 11 points as FEU Coach Shaq delos Santos shuffled his wards and test their plays against the Lady Blazers.
Skipper Remy Palma also stepped up for the Lady Tams with 10 hits including two aces, while Toni Rose Basas also finished with 10 points including a spike that sealed the win.
“Intact naman kami except sa setter kasi wala na si Gyzelle Sy sa team,” said Delos Santos.
Over in the Spikers’ Turf Season 2 Collegiate Conference, National U and University of Santo Tomas fashioned out a pair of three-set romps over their respective rivals to join opening day winners La Salle and University of the Philippine in the early lead.
The Bulldogs drew a combined 31-hit output from Bryan Bagunas, Francis Saura and Madzlan Gampong to turn back the Far Eastern U Tams in a tightly-fought duel, 25-23, 25-23, 25-22, and gain a share of the early lead with the Archers, who repulsed sister school St. Benilde in four last Saturday, in Group A.
UST, on the other hand, overpowered National College of Business and Arts, 25-18, 25-20, 25-13, to share the lead with UP, which foiled Emilio Aguinaldo College in four, in Group B.
