Reigning titlist National University asserted its might and whipped Technological Institute of the Philippines, 25-17, 25-17, 25-18, yesterday to gain the solo lead in its bracket in the Shakey’s V-League Season 13 Collegiate Conference at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.
The Lady Bulldogs needed only 69 minutes in dominating the Lady Engineers and relied on their strong serves to clinch their second straight win in as many games.
So solid were their serves that NU managed 14 aces – four coming from setter Jasmine Nabor – to expose TIP’s poor reception.
Jaja Santiago towered over the rest – literally and figuratively – as the 6-foot-4 spiker pounced on 19 points built on 14 attacks, two blocks and three aces for the Lady Bulldogs.
Fil-Japanese Risa Sato also made her presence felt with 10 kills, even as Nabor silently contributed with 49 excellent sets.
TIP, which is coming off an inspiring five-set victory over fancied Ateneo last week, lost its spark and managed only 24 team attacks out of 111 attempts.
Guest player Mylene Paat was also the lone double-digit scorer for the Lady Engineers with 11 points.
Meanwhile, University of the Philippines and National University toppled their respective rivals in contrasting fashion yesterday to stay unbeaten in their brackets in the Spikers’ Turf Season 2.
The Maroons needed a little over two hours in besting National College of Business and Arts, 25-12, 27-25, 23-25, 25-27, 15-13, while the Bulldogs routed Philippine Merchant Marine School, 25-18, 25-20, 25-15.
Both NU and UP clinched their respective second victories to remain on top of Group A and B, respectively.
