Don’t be surprised when illegally parked vehicles sent for impounding by the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) have to be redeemed in Tarlac City.
Victor Nunez, head of the MMDA’s Towing Operations Group, said they have been given a green light to do so by the Department of Transportation.
“We are appealing to vehicle owners to look for proper parking areas because we will not hesitate to transport them to Tarlac,” said Nuñez.
According to Nuñez, Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade have directed them to bring the excess impounded vehicles from Ultra impounding site in Pasig City to the impounding area of Land Transportation Office (LTO) and Land Transportation, Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) in Tarlac.
“Our present impounding sites are already congested with hauled illegally parked vehicles with the agency’s continued operation,” MMDA public information office head Goddes Hope Libiran said.
During operation, the anti-illegal team hauls an average of 45-50 vehicles. While some owners redeem their vehicles the next day, it takes a while for others.
At present, the MMDA has two impounding sites: Ultra in Pasig City which can accommodate up to 80 vehicles and Tumana in Marikina City that can accommodate 250 vehicles.
Nunez said a memorandum of agreement will be signed by the members of the inter-agency committee to formalize the transfer of the impounded vehicles. (Anna Liza Villas-Alavaren)
