Defending champion Ateneo made short work of University of Santo Tomas, 25-16, 25-15, 25-21, yesterday to secure the first semifinal berth in the Spikers’ Turf Season 2 Collegiate Conference at The Arena in San Juan City.
The Eagles needed only 62 minutes in disposing of the Tigers to remain the only unbeaten team in Group B with a 4-0 win-loss slate.
Everybody contributed a little of everything for Ateneo as Coach Oliver Almadro shuffled his wards, with power-hitting Marck Espejo topscoring with eight points.
Ysay Marasigan and Joshua Villanueva also stepped up for the Eagles with seven points each, while Russian-American recruit Tony Koyfman and Rex Intal contributed six points apiece.
Ateneo dominated in all departments particularly in attacks, 32-28, as UST struggled with its defense by managing only two blocks out of 23 attempts.
It also did not help the Tigers that they stumbled into 33 whopping errors.
UST slipped to second with a 3-1 card, its semis chances still strong despite leaving only one assignment left in the preliminaries.
