San Sebastian fired eight of the last 10 points in the fourth set as it routed University of Santo Tomas, 25-20, 25-18, 16-25, 25-19, yesterday in the quarterfinals of the Shakey’s V-League Season 13 Collegiate Conference at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.
Tied 17-all, Grethcel Soltones and Katherine Villegas launched a spirited attack behind the net to dominate the Tigresses and improve to 2-1 win-loss in the six-team carryover phase.
Soltones, fighting the effects of flu since Tuesday night, still sizzled with 23 points including 21 kills, while Villegas and Joyce Sta. Rita added nine points apiece.
San Sebastian’s win eliminated UST in the title race after the Tigresses stumbled into a 0-4 card.
“Buti naman gumana yung mga players kasi nagkulang kami sa resistensya,” said San Sebastian Assistant Coach Clint Malazo, explaining that his players still haven’t recovered from an event over the weekend.
It will be the first time that UST will be missing the Final Four in the history of the league, with the absence of power-hitters Cherry Rondina and EJ Laure taking a big toll in the team’s campaign.
Guest player and high school standout Eya Laure bannered the Tigresses with 16 points built on 14 attacks and two blocks, while Ria Meneses posted 11 hits.
La Salle, meanwhile, outsteadied Philippine Merchant Marine School 25-23, 25-22, 25-22 to force a four-way tie for Group A lead in the Spikers’ Turf Season 2 Collegiate Conference.
