San Sebastian slayed another giant in Mapua with a 69-67 victory yesterday to extend its winning streak in NCAA men’s basketball at The Arena in San Juan City.
The Stags recovered from an 18-point deficit early in the second quarter, 26-8, and a 64-59 deficit in the last 2:15 of the game to turn back the Cardinals and improve to a 4-9 win-loss record.
It was San Sebastian’s third straight victory since stunning fancied teams University of Perpetual Help (71-55) and San Beda (72-71), resuscitating their Final Four chances.
Ryan Costelo powered the Stags with 20 points, seven assists and two steals, even as Michael Calisaan fired 15 markers and grabbed 13 boards.
“The good thing about it is that the character is building up sa mga players ko and they are not giving up,” said San Sebastian Coach Egay Macaraya.
Nine straight points from the Stags gave them the 68-64 lead with under a minute to go, but a triple from Darell Menina trimmed the gap, 68-67.
Meanwhile, Jose Rizal went to Teytey Teodoro in the fourth quarter as it turned back Lyceum, 68-58, to jump into a share of fourth with Mapua.
Coming off a 22-point performance in a 65-60 win over Mapua, Teodoro dropped 10 of his 21 points in the final period to help propel the Bombers (4-5).
