Sa bagang na namamaga – dahon ng mustaza nguyain nang hilaw.
Singaw sa bibig – kumuha ng lantin. Sunugin. Ilagay sa tubig at mumugin.
Doon sa ang ulo ay may kuto – kumuha ng ugat ng cogon. Ilaga ito at siyang gawing pampaligo.
The author states in the introduction that this collection published by Aklatang Lunas is addressed only to those who have faith in the medicinal value of our plants, their roots, leaves, fruits, seeds, what not. A person’s choice of medicine, he continues, is a reflection of his personal belief. While some people are accustomed to seeing doctors at the slightest hint of a headache, others consult the hometown albularyo.
But even the author himself is not prejudiced against medical doctors in general. He duly recognizes them. For instance, he prescribes bunga ng lagundi for one who has been bitten by a mad dog. Advice number two says: dito ay kailangan na ang injection. Sumangguni sa doktor.
He guides: if the names of the plants and solutions mentioned in the book are not known to you, go to the sellers of herbal wares that surround Quaipo church. There, they sell all the raw materials written about in the book, says Cora Reyes, herself an herb vendor.
These days, more and more people are realizing the medicinal values of local plants. The list includes scientists and researchers.
A study conducted recently by the National Institute of Science and Technology revealed that a good number of local plants can be tapped to produce medicine. Papaya, in fact, was reported as possessing some component – called carpaine – that can be developed to cure cancer.
