House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez criticized the past Aquino administration over the weekend for the “shameful” job it did in the rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts in Tacloban City, Leyte.
“Nakakalungkot dahil nakakahiya yung ginawa ng gobyerno,” a disappointed Alvarez said shortly after touring relocation sites in the provincial capital Saturday.
“Ang naging problema pala hindi rin nila binigyan ng tubig at kuryente yung mga relocation sites. So kailangan natin i-ayos ito,” said the House leader and secretary-general of Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan.
According to Alvarez, the government’s rehab efforts in the storm-ravaged city was nothing compared to what the various non-government organizations did in the aftermath.
“Ikumpara mo doon sa ginawa nung mga NGO ang layo e, layong maganda. Ngayon tanong ko sa sarili ko, bakit nagkaganito?” the Davao del Norte representative said.
He noted that residents have returned to the dangers zones and erected shanties there. “Tanong ko bakit wala doon sa relocation sites?” the House Speaker asked.
Alvarez said he will leave it up to Leyte Rep. Henry Ong to investigate how the typhoon “Yolanda” disaster funds were used by the previous administration. “Nandito naman si Cong. Henry Ong ibigay natin sa kanya ang pagkakataon na siya na ang mag-imbestiga dito,” he said. (Ellson A. Quismorio)
