Reigning titlist Ateneo routed University of the Philippines, 25-21, 25-18, 25-12, yesterday to sweep the preliminaries of the Spikers’ Turf Season 2 Collegiate Conference at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.
Led by Russian-American rookie Tony Koyfman, the early semifinalist Eagles needed only 59 minutes in dispatching the Maroons to pick up their fifth straight victory in Group B.
Overall, the Katipunan-based squad only dropped a single set while winning 15 sets.
The 6-foot-8 Koyfman scored 10 points including seven attacks as Ateneo Coach Oliver Almadro used 13 players in the match.
Marck Espejo and Joshua Villanueva helped with eight points apiece for the Eagles, even as Ish Polvoroza finished with 26 excellent sets.
UP stumbled into a 3-2 slate, but is still assured of at least a playoff for the semis berth.
Meanwhile, eliminated team College of St. Benilde outplayed a tough Philippine Merchant Marine School, 25-17, 32-30, 29-27, to finish its campaign at 1-4 on Group A.
PMMS also ended its bid with a 0-5 record.
