Rookie point guard drops seven 3-pointers.
Rookie point guard Regille Ilagan unleashed a three-point barrage in the second half as San Sebastian whipped Lyceum, 77-69, yesterday to extend its winning run in NCAA men’s basketball at The Arena in San Juan City.
Ilagan buried seven triples – four in the pivotal third quarter – to finish with a career-high 25 points as the Stags picked up their fourth straight victory.
The win hiked San Sebastian’s record to 5-9 win-loss, half a game behind its rival Lyceum which sank to 5-8 after absorbing its third straight loss.
Trailing 38-35, early in the third period, Ilagan headed a 16-1 assault as San Sebastian grabbed a 51-39 advantage on the way to a 55-42 bulge in the last 1:07 of the quarter.
It also helped that the Pirates struggled with their freethrows in that period, missing 10 charities.
Lyceum tried to trim the gap with a Wilson Baltazar trey in the last 1:53 for 70-64, but it proved to be the Pirates’ last stand as the Stags protected their lead the rest of the way.
In the end, the Stags made 14 triples compared to the Pirates’ two, despite getting outrebounded, 37-57.
Meanwhile, Emilio Aguinaldo College (EAC) snapped Jose Rizal Uiversity’s (JRU) four-game winning streak with a 63-60 victory.
Hamadou Laminou and Remy Morada scored the last three points in the final 38.1 ticks for the Generals, who improved to 4-9.
JRU, however, put the game under protest after the team claimed that a foul was called on Teytey Teodoro during his buzzer-beating attempt behind the arc.
