Centro Escolar University and De La Salle Zobel kicked off their bids for sixth straight basketball titles even as host Saint Jude Catholic School also scored during the opening weekend of the 47th WNCAA in different venues.
The five-time senior champion CEU walloped Philippine Women’s University, 66-45, last Saturday at the Makati Coliseum with last season’s Most Valuable Player Cristine Caranto topscoring with 16 points for the Patriots.
The following day at the St. Scholastica’s College gym, five-time midgets champion DLSZ whipped Miriam College, 58-39. Carly Kaye Monreal, the 46th season MVP, led the Green Archers with 21 points.
In juniors’ play, Saint Jude downed St. Stephen’s High School, 40-34, but SSHS rebounded with a 44-35 victory over Poveda the following day.
University of Asia & the Pacific also won over Miriam, 40-37, while San Beda College Alabang beat St. Scholastica, 53-16, in seniors’ play.
Other midgets matches had St. Paul College Pasig edging Poveda, 42-38, and San Beda beating Saint Jude, 34-13, in the league being supported by AksyonTV, Mikasa, Molten, Gosen, Goody, BaliPure, Perskindol and City Lady socks.
In the volleyball competition which started Sunday at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum, CEU bested St. Scholastica, 25-13, 25-15, 25-16; San Beda prevailed over Assumption, 25-22, 25-19, 25-14; and PWU outlasted Miriam, 25-13, 22-25, 25-23, 25-14.
Volleyball superstar Alyssa Valdez and former UA&P senior basketball team captain and now PBA Operations & Business Development manager Roscelle Teotico graced Saturday’s kickoff rites.
