TNT’s overpowering start has a lot to do with combo guard Jayson Castro’s stellar plays in the ongoing PBA Governors Cup.
The 5-foot-8 Castro, nicknamed the “Blur” has been a matchup nightmare for opposing teams in the season-ending conference.
The 30-year-old, two-time Best Point Guard in Asia had the last laugh in his scoring duel with the PBA’s fast-rising star Terrence Romeo, firing a personal season-high 37 points, while going six-of-11 from three-point zone as TNT outlasted GlobalPort, 122-120 on Aug. 31.
Castro also issued eight assists and hauled down four rebounds in an all-around effort.
Three days later, Castro dished off 13 assists, another personal-high this season, while pumping in 16 points to help TNT pulverize defending champion San Miguel Beer, 105-85 in their out-of-town collision in Batangas City on Saturday.
The back-to-back wins secured the KaTropa a twice-to-beat incentive heading into the playoffs as they improved to a tournament-best 8-1 record.
