Rain or Shine’s veteran coach Yeng Guiao is close to signing a fresh deal with the Elasto Painters, ensuring a partnership that has produced two championships for the franchise since he took over six years ago.
Guiao mentioned Saturday night after the game between ROS and defending champion San Miguel Beer that talks have already started with management and will likely end this week.
“We talked already,” said Guiao.
The feisty mentor joined Rain or Shine in December 2010 after his coaching stint with the now-defunct Air21. He signed for three years and after it ended, he inked another three-year deal.
The current contract expires on Sept. 30. He didn’t mention terms of the contract currently under negotiation.
Guiao said that talk taking place when his contract is nearing its end is no big deal.
“It’s not an issue, wala akong concern or issues. Siguro details lang pag-uusapan. I don’t think it’s going to get to Sept. 30 before we can finalize, siguro in the next few days,” said Guiao.
The franchise joined the pro league in 2007 following its successful campaign for years in the the Philippine Basketball League.
It was under Guiao that the team had success as ROS made its first semifinal appearance during the 2011 Governors’ Cup.
The following season, Rain or Shine reached the finals for the first time and completed a ‘Cinderella’ finish when it bagged the 2012 Governors’ Cup title by beating San Mig Super Coffee (now Star).
