Defending champion San Beda subdued stubborn Emilio Aguinaldo Aguinaldo, 86-79, yesterday to gain at least a playoff for the twice-to-beat semifinal incentive today in NCAA juniors basketball at The Arena in San Juan City.
Joshua Tagala and Evan Nelle fired 17 and 14 points, respectively, for the Red Cubs, who clinched their 15th victory against a single loss.
Center Sam Abu Hijle also shone for San Beda with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Carlo Obenza chipped in 12 points to help deal EAC its 13th defeat against two wins.
Meanwhile, Troy Mallinllin exploded with 20 points and 18 rebounds as CSB-La Salle Greenhills stunned Arellano, 77-70, for a tie at second place with its opponent at 13-3.
The Greenies battled through 10 deadlocks and eight lead changes against the Braves.
Guilmer Dela Torre topped Arellano with 27 points, while Carlo Abadeza had 18 points, 15 boards and four blocks in a futile effort.
In the other match, Mapua dumped Letran, 86-77, to hike its win-loss record at 12-3. The Squires fell to 6-10.
