San Beda College Alabang, Centro Escolar University and University of Asia & the Pacific notched their second straight wins over the weekend to pace the senior division of the 47th WNCAA basketball and volleyball tournaments held in separate venues.
San Beda dumped Miriam College, 63-27, and UA&P outlasted Assumption College, 47-41, on Sunday at the St.Scholastica’s College gym to lead senior basketball with 2-0 cards.
Five-time defending midget champion De La Salle Zobel also soared to a 2-0 record after beating San Beda, 57-24, and St. Paul College Pasig joined them on top as it won over host St. Jude Catholic School, 44-15.
Chiang Kai Shek College opened its junior title-retention bid with a 67-41 beating of Angelicum College.
In senior volleyball at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum, San Beda prevailed in straight sets over Miriam, 25-18, 25-15, 25-23, and CEU stopped Philippine Women’s University, 25-15, 25-19, 25-15, for similar 2-0 slates.
Defending junior champion Miriam labored through five sets before taking out St. Paul, 22-25, 25-20, 25-20, 22-25, 15-10, to open its campaign and share the early lead at 1-0 with San Beda, Angelicum, St. Scholastica, La Salle College Antipolo and DLSZ.
San Beda also triumphed over Assumption in midget volleyball, 25-14, 25-12, to tote a 2-0 slate along with DLSZ, a 25-18, 25-18 winner over St. Paul, and St. Scholastica, which upended Miriam, 17-25, 25-11, 25-9, in the league being supported by TV5, Mikasa, Molten, Goody, Perskindol, BaliPure and City Lady socks.
PWU, last year’s senior futsal runner-up to Rizal Technological University which withdrew participation this season, also kicked off its bid Sunday at the UA&P gym with a 2-0 blanking of UA&P.
San Beda bested Assumption, 4-2, and Miriam nipped CEU, 1-0.
