These days, it’s no longer uncommon to encounter children with autism.
The number of autistic children in the Philippines has grown considerably that some parents have banded together to form the Autism Society of the Philippines, the better to support each other in their quest for a better life for their children.
A report by Lisa Rapaport of Reuters Health said recently that women who take antidepressants during pregnancy may be more likely to have children with autism, according to a Canadian study.
The overall risk is low, says the report. Less than 1 percent of the nearly 150,000 babies in the study were diagnosed with autism by age six or seven.
According to the report, children of women who took antidepressants during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy were 87 percent more likely to develop autism than kids born to women who didn’t take the drugs, researchers reported in JAMA Pediatrics.
“Depression is a serious and debilitating condition,” said lead study author Anick Berard of the University of Montreal.
“This study is not advocating untreated depression. However, it is certainly advocating treatment of depression with something other than antidepressants during pregnancy,” she told Reuters.

The study suggested that pregnant women, who may be suffering from mild depression, can manage depression through exercise or psychotherapy.
The researchers, however, don’t claim that in general, antidepressants cause autism.
They suggest, however, that in looking for remedies other than medication, it might be safer or more effective for women and their babies to look the other way.
Depression during pregnancy is also associated with underweight babies.
