FOR some reason, a few people I know are suffering from anxiety and depression.
Do you think the weather may have something to do with it?
Anxiety and depression are more than just feelings. They are considered the most common mental illnesses among people nowadays. Usually, people get depressed or anxious because of painful events that happened in their lives.
There are no clear reasons that can explain such heavy feelings within.
According to Sally R. Connolly, LCSW, almost 50 percent of people experiencing depression suffer with severe and persistent anxiety. People suffering from anxiety become uncertain and afraid.
According to Anxiety and Depression Association of America (ADAA), depression is a feeling which gives hopelessness, apathy, pain and discouragement to people. It usually lasts for some period of time, sometimes longer.
It is called a major depressive episode if such a feeling continuously occurs for more than two weeks that it can affect adversely one’s personal activities or work.
On the other hand, “anxiety may be a normal reaction to stress.”
While they may look the same as both show nervousness and irritability, depression and anxiety are two different problems. They each have their own emotional and behavioral symptoms.
Depression affects men and women differently. The National Institute of Mental Health said that women do not experience the same symptoms as men. Depression for them stems from the feeling of insignificance, guilt, and sadness.
Compared to men, women are more likely to be depressed. Irritation, exhaustion, disinterest and sleeping difficulty are mostly manifested among depressed men.
Everydayhealth.com shows that both disorders confirm symptoms of irrational fear, worry, and insomnia. Difficulty in decision making, memorization and concentration are some symptoms, too.
Yet, we need not worry much. Depression and anxiety can be treated. There’s cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) which teaches patients to manage fears and uncertainties.
Exercise and medications are also prescribed. Relaxation techniques like meditation helps.
Still, the best way to address these feelings is to feel loved. (KIM ATIENZA)
