President Ferdinand E. Marcos could be buried at the Libingan ng mga Bayani in Taguig City within the year, presidential spokesman Ernesto Abella announced yesterday.
“The best we can say is it will be within the year,” Abella said during a news conference in Malacañang.
Abella, however, did not specify the exact date of the burial of Marcos at the Libingan ng mga Bayani which was recently upheld by the Supreme Court.
Following the SC decision, President Duterte said the Marcos family could proceed with the burial preparations for the former leader at the LNMB.
The President said he would not “take his word back” on endorsing the Marcos burial, adding he would stick to the law that allows former Presidents to be laid to rest at the LNMB.
The SC ruled that Duterte did not commit any grave abuse of discretion in ordering Marcos’ interment at the heroes’ cemetery.
Many human rights advocates have deplored the controversial decision, saying it has disregarded the atrocities during the Martial Law regime of Marcos. (Genalyn D. Kabiling)
