Gospel Reading: Lk 18:35-43
As Jesus approached Jericho a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging, and hearing a crowd going by, he inquired what was happening. They told him, “Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.” He shouted, “Jesus, Son of David, have pity on me!” The people walking in front rebuked him, telling him to be silent, but he kept calling out all the more, “Son of David, have pity on me!” Then Jesus stopped and ordered that he be brought to him; and when he came near, Jesus asked him, “What do you want me to do for you?” He replied, “Lord, please let me see.” Jesus told him, “Have sight; your faith has saved you.” He immediately received his sight and followed him, giving glory to God. When they saw this, all the people gave praise to God.
REFLECTION
LORD, PLEASE LET ME SEE
People from Galilee usually pass by Jericho to go to Jerusalem. As Jesus nears Jericho, a blind beggar calls out to him.
Let us note how the beggar prays. First, he may have heard from the people passing by about Jesus’ miracles in Galilee. As he begs, he positions himself where Jesus will pass by. Second, as soon as he is notified that Jesus is passing by, the blind man shouts, “Jesus… have pity on me,” not knowing exactly where Jesus is. His voice causes some commotion. He is not afraid to make noise. Third, as he is rebuked and told to keep quiet, he cries out all the more, repeating his petition. This calls the attention of Jesus who asks for him. Fourth, in a lower and humble voice, the blind man expresses his desire to see.
Last Saturday’s Gospel was about constancy in prayer (cf Lk 18:1). This time it is about making one’s petition known without being ashamed. The blind man does not beg for money but asks for the gift of sight. Jesus acknowledges his faith and grants his request. When the man receives his sight, he follows Jesus and glorifies God.

Like the blind man, we cry out for help. God responds to our faith. When help comes, do we follow Jesus and give glory to God?
