Plenty of Final Four scenarios could happen by the end of tomorrow when the double-elimination round of the UAAP basketball tournament concludes with a pair of crucial matches at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Far Eastern University battles University of the East in the first game at 2 p.m. before Ateneo and Adamson square off at 4 p.m. in a showdown between the league’s hottest teams.
Ateneo is in second place at 9-4, while Adamson and FEU are tied for third at 8-5 entering tomorrow’s matches.
There’s a likelihood of a three-way tie for second at 9-5 should FEU beat UE and Adamson, which won four in a row, snap the five-game winning run of Ateneo.
Under league rules, the two teams with the superior quotients dispute the second seed in a playoff, dropping the third to fourth.
Should that occur, Ateneo and Adamson play next week in a playoff for the No. 2 spot in the twice-to-beat advantage in the Final Four faceoff, while dropping FEU to fourth and a meeting with top seed and twice-to-beat La Salle on an inferior quotient.
But computations made by statistics provider Imperium said that Adamson and FEU will play a playoff for No. 2 if Adamson wins by 31 points over Ateneo, which falls to fourth.
Ateneo will secure second with a victory over Adamson, while getting a twice-to-beat bonus opposite FEU, regardless of the outcome of its game with UE.
Ateneo and Adamson peaked at the right time after playing inconsistent in the first round of eliminations, while its the other way around for FEU, which dropped three in a row including a heartbreaking 73-67 loss to La Salle last Saturday.
La Salle claimed the top spot after going 13-1 in the eliminations.
