The Philippine Olympic Committee-Gawad Kalinga San Agustin Activity Center was turned over to the Gawad Kalinga community in the town of Palo, Leyte during a ceremony held recently.
International Olympic Committee Representative Mikee Cojuangco-Jaworski represented the POC in the event.
This is the first of four planned activity centers that will be put up in locations affected by Typhoon Haiyan. The other locations that will receive activity centers are Albuera, Alangalang, and Tanauan, Leyte.
The POC partnered with GK to support the latter’s projects and activities with no interference of the government.
The NGO also provided the engineering and construction expertise to build the center. The facilities will be managed and operated by GK.
“We are happy we have turned over one center and we look forward to undertaking the three other centers,” said Project Engineer Edito Mulig of the GK Engineering group Effused.
A total of US$450,000 were donated by IOC, Olympic Solidarity, and the Olympic Council of Asia to build these centers.
