Colegio De San Lorenzo clinched the fourth and last semis berth in grand fashion, crushing University of Batangas, 88-49, in the Universities and Colleges Basketball League (UCBL) yesterday at the Olivarez Sports Center in Parañaque City.
With Charles Callano and Dominic Formento at the helm, the CDSL Griffins came through with several spurts in the second quarter to turn what was expected to be a dogfight with the UB Brahmans into a walk in the park.
After a slow start that saw them take just a 19-14 lead at the end of the first quarter, the Griffins outscored their rivals 30-9 for a commanding 49-23 advantage.
It was all Griffins show from there as Irvin Ancheta joined the scoring spree to help maintain their lead.
The Griffins, however, should keep their hot form as they face an improbable task of beating the No. 1 Centro Escolar University Scorpions twice in the semis to advance to the finals which is a best-of-three affair.
Clashing in the other semis pairing are No. 2 Technological Institute of the Philippines and No. 3 Olivarez College.
The TIP Engineerrs also enjoy a twice-to-beat advantage over the Olivarez Sea Lions.
Callano led the Griffins with 21 points while Formento and Ancheta chipped in 20 and 14 points, respectively.
Meanwhile, Diliman College ended a six-game losing run with a 90-68 drubbing of Bulacan State University in the first game.
John Bauzon led the Diliman Blue Dragons with 21 points while Joseph Brutas and Peter Cecilio combined for 34 points.
