Defending champion Armed Forces of the Philippines ended Malacañang’s five-game winning run with a 72-67 win to advance to the second round of the 5th UNTV Cup held over the weekend at the Pasig City Sports Center.
Willy Casulla, Jr. led five AFP players in double figures with 14 points as the Cavaliers dominated the Malacañang Kamao right from the start to avoid the embarrassment of being the first defending champion to be eliminated right in the first round.
Also delivering for the Cavaliers were Boyet Bautista and Eugene Tan who combined for 21 points.
With the win, the Cavaliers finished the Group A elims tied for second to third places with Bureau of Fire Protection, which closed out its elims with an 80-73 win over Ombudsman.
Meantime, Sunday’s matches will be aired live on UNTV and www.untvweb.com.
The MMDA Black Wolves also made it to the second round following a hard-earned 76-71 win over the Senate Defenders in the tournament presented by UNTV through its president and CEO Daniel Razon.
Despite the loss, the Ombudsman Graft Fighters still made it to the next round by finishing with a 2-4 mark.
The top four teams in Group B – Bureau of Customs, Judiciary, PNP and NHA – slug it out with the top four teams from Group carrying their win-loss records from the first round.
Leading the Fire Fighters was Gilbert Malabanan who fired points while Peter John Villanueva and Jeff Sanders led the Black Wolves with 19 and 14 points, respectively.
