The Philippine National Police (PNP) warned the public about the presence of 28 fake Facebook accounts bearing the name of Director General Roland “Bato” dela Rosa.
Senior Supt. Gilbert Cruz, the chief of the PNP’s Police Community Relations Group (PCRG), yesterday said some of the social media accounts are FB fan pages of the PNP chief while the rest pretend to be that of Dela Rosa, asking money or gifts from people.
Cruz also said that some FB users who file or air complaints via the fake Dela Rosa FB accounts even told them that they will act on their grievances for as long they send money to a bank account they will provide.
“The others are just fan pages of the chief PNP but the others take advantage and ask for Christmas gifts. The others, meanwhile, will tell complainants that they will be assisted for as long as they will send money in an account,” said Cruz.
Cruz said the full force of the law will be thrown on those who are doing this kind of “Identity Theft”.
“We are warning them, they can get punish for this. We have ways of knowing who they are,” Cruz said. “That’s not good for us (PNP). They are using his (Dela Rosa’s) name and photo to deceive the public. We will not tolerate this.”
Cruz said they will refer the matter to the PNP Cyber Crime Group. (Francis T. Wakefield)
