Mount Bulusan in Sorsogon had 22 volcanic earthquakes Friday morning, less than 24 hours after generating a phreatic eruption from its southeast vent last Thursday afternoon, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.
In its latest Bulusan Volcano bulletin, Phivolcs said the seismic event recorded the other day – an explosion-type of earthquake that lasted approximately 16 minutes – affected a total of seven villages in the municipalities of Irosin and Juban in Sorsogon.
Phivolcs said thin ash fell on the small towns of Cogon, Tinampo, Bolos, Umagom, Gulang-gulang and Monbon in Irosin and barangays Caladgao and Guruyan in Juban. Sulfuric smell was also experienced in Guruyan, Juban and Monbon and Tinampo, Irosin.
Alert Level 1 remains in effect over Mount Bulusan, indicating that hydrothermal processes are underway beneath it that may lead to steam-driven or phreatic eruptions. (Aytch dela Cruz)
