Fil-Brit Connor Tacagni came through with a “lucky” goal late in extra time as San Beda edged St. Benilde, 1-0, yesterday to emerge the league’s most titled seniors football team in the 92nd NCAA tournament at the Rizal Football field.
Tacagni, 23, attempted a cross from the left flank but went straight to the top right part of the net and past St. Benilde goalkeeper Jake Allen Vicen that proved to be decisive as San Beda hung tough to preserve the crown.
The Red Booters thus clinched their 22nd title, the most in the league today ahead by one over former member La Salle’s 21.
And they did it via 13-match sweep.
“We cherish this win because it came against St. Benilde,” said San Beda coach Michael Pediamonte.
Tacagni, who hails from Manchester, England but whose mother is a Filipina, said he was just lucky.
“I was just trying to get into the box but it went in. I guess I was a little bit lucky,” he said.
San Beda also completed a double celebration as its juniors squad smashed last year’s titlist La Salle-Greenhills, 5-1, to capture its 17th title.
