Sen. Alan Peter S. Cayetano said yesterday that he is ready to serve the government in any capacity that President Duterte deems fit.
Cayetano, who ran and lost in the vice presidential race in the May 2016 elections as Duterte’s running mate, is being floated as the next Department of Foreign Affairs secretary.
The senator previously hinted at a possible appointment at the DFA after the lifting of the one-year ban on appointment for losing candidates.
In a recent interview, Duterte confirmed Cayetano would be appointed to the DFA as the new secretary, replacing Perfecto Yasay Jr.
But in an interview in Palawan, the senator clarified he has yet to accept a formal offer from the President.
“I told the President that I will help him in any capacity na tingin niya makakatulong. So by April or May, pupuntahan ko siya,” Cayetano said. “Kung anong sabihin niyang assignment ko ay malugod kong tatanggapin,” he added.
The senator said he would be willing to help the administration achieve its goal of creating genuine reforms for the country if he becomes part of the Duterte Cabinet.
“Ayokong pangunahan ang Pangulo o sinumang Secretary…I think they’re all performing well,” he said. “Pero kung anong sabihin ng Pangulo sa mga susunod na buwan, I’d be happy to help,” Cayetano said. (Hannah L. Torregoza)
