Bureau of Fire Protection secured the last quarterfinal berth with a thrilling 80-79 win over National Housing Authority in the 5th UNTV Cup held over the weekend at the Pasig City Sports Center.
Former St. Francis of Assisi star Gilbert Malabanan starred for the BFP Firefighters as he scattered 23 points, including a clutch basket that helped frustrate the NHA Builders.
Also delivering for the Firefighters were Gerald Botin and Anthony Lim, who chipped in 17 and 12 points, respectively, as BFP ended in joint 4th to 6th places with Malacanang and defending champion Armed Forces of the Philippines with similar 6-4 records.
Meantime, Philippine National Police claimed the No. 3 spot by downing Malacanang, 71-63, in the tournament organized by UNTV president and CEO Daniel Razon.
The chosen charity of the champion team will get P4 million.
The PNP Responders actually finished tied with Bureau of Customs and Judiciary for the first with 8-2 marks but the former had to settle for third owing to the winner over the other rule.
For finishing 1-2, BOC and Judiciary advanced outright to the semis with PNP battling No. 6 BFP and Malacanang taking on AFP in the quarters.
Antonio Tolentino and Ollan Omiping sparked PNP’s vicious comeback from a 9-point early in the fourth period behind their hot shooting. They combined for 32 points.
