President Duterte is amenable to providing sanctuary to refugees in the country “in the name of humanity.”
The President made the gesture after expressing respect to the United States’ decision to temporarily close its borders to those who have been displaced by conflict.
“In the name of humanity and God, we will have to make some adjustments. If there is a compelling reason for us to offer sanctuary, I’m one of those na okay lang ako,” Duterte said in a press conference in Malacañang Sunday.
“If they cannot go anywhere, anymore except to face death by hunger, driven out to the sea, we will consider it,” he added.
The President, however, said he must still get the approval of Congress before the country can accept more refugees.
He admitted that the influx of the refugees may pose a potential problem but could be managed if handled properly.
The President said he respects US President Donald Trump’s decision to curb the entry of refugees into his country. (Genalyn D. Kabiling)
