Nearly 1,000 individuals were diagnosed with Human Immunodeficiency Virus last year after engaging in transactional sex, the Department of Health reported.
“People who engage in transactional sex are those who report that they pay for sex, regularly accept payment for sex, or do both,” the DoH said.
Citing the December 2016 HIV and AIDS Registry of the Philippines report, the DoH revealed that 985 individuals were infected with HIV through transactional sex from January to December 2016.
The Health department disclosed that more than half or 509, 505 males and four females, paid for sex, while 317, 294 males and 23 females, acquired HIV after accepting payment for sex. (Charina Charisse L. Echaluce)
