Even after endorsing the burial of President Ferdinand E. Marcos at the Libingan ng mga Bayani, Malacañang is planning to commemorate the 31st anniversary of the EDSA People Power revolution anniversary with dignity.
“The EDSA revolution has its own particular dignity,” presidential spokesperson Ernesto Abella said in a Palace press briefing.
“When I say with dignity, I mean whatever they do will be to honor, will be to give its due honor,” he added, when asked how the government plans to commemorate the EDSA revolt now that Marcos, who was ousted by the bloodless revolution, has been buried at the Libingan ng mga Bayani last November.
Abella, however, said he has yet to find out the actual activities commemorating the EDSA revolution on February 25, a special holiday in the country.
Asked if the President will attend the commemorative rites, Abella said he would still check the Chief Executive’s schedule.
President Duterte had assigned Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea to chair the EDSA People Power Commission, tasked to promote the spirit of the bloodless revolt that ousted the Marcos dictatorship.
Abella said the government will mark this year’s EDSA celebration as “A Day of Reflection: Celebrating People Power.”
The commission, created by Executive Order No. 82 in 1999, is mandated to initiate activities that will expand awareness of the EDSA revolt principles and values. It is also assigned to organize and implement the annual commemoration of the people revolt. (Genalyn D. Kabiling)
