Derrick Williams is currently signed to a 10-day contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers but is expected to get an extension. It could be a second 10-day deal but if the recent praise of LeBron James is any indication, it may be until the end of this NBA season at the least.
The 25-year-old former no. 2 pick of the 2011 NBA Draft apparently impressed against the Denver Nuggets. Williams saw 20 minutes of action and ended up with 7 points and a rebound in the 125-109 win by the Cavs over the Nuggets.
James sounded off in an interview that he hoped that the case of Derrick Williams would be a long-term thing. As far as Williams is concerned, playing in front of the Quicken Loans Arena was an experience he has not experienced ever since setting foot in the NBA.
Williams has been inconsistent with past teams and his decision to join the Miami Heat earlier this year proved costly. He barely had playing time though he may get a lot of that under the watch of head coach Tyronn Lue. From the looks of it, he is ready to rejuvenate his career and prove passing teams wrong.
“I’m still learning, man,” Williams said in an interview with Ohio.com. “A lot of people in this league really get counted out way too early. I have a lot of game left.”
Making the plausible as well is the fact the Kevin Love recently went down with a knee injury. The all-star forward complained of soreness following their win over the Nuggets and will not suit up when the Cavs meet the Minnesota Timberwolves. He already underwent MRI but the results were not divulged by Cleveland.
This means that the big man woes of the Cavs continue with Williams, Tristan Thompson and Channing Frye as the only healthy players on the roster.
