A board resolution is expected to be passed today that will exclude a number of national sports associations from getting financial support from the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), chairman William ‘Butch’ Ramirez said yesterday.
Ramirez didn’t say exactly how many NSAs will feel the PSC’s pinch but the 65-year-old appointee of President Rodrigo Duterte mentioned tennis and swimming as tops on the list as they are not only under-performing but problematic NSAs.
“These are NSAs that don’t only live up to our expectations but NSAs that have been unable to shape up because they have leaders who do not adhere to the PSC’s principles,” said Ramirez, who had earlier advised NSAs to clean their respective backyards.
Ramirez also didn’t bat an eyelash in assailing the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC), which the Davao-born educator said tolerated the NSAs’ misgivings.
“The POC didn’t do anything and it allowed the NSAs to do what they want so they can extend their terms,” said Ramirez, noting that while support to the NSAs will no longer be given, the athletes and coaches will continue to get help.
“The athletes and coaches will get help from us but officials of NSAs won’t get anything from us so they should start looking for money so they can travel on their own,” said Ramirez.
Amid the PSC’s impending crackdown, Ramirez took a dig at Philta, which recently unveiled a new set of officers that was hardly new with the installation of long-time head Buddy Andrada.
A small group of stakeholders – the father-and-son tandems from the Olivarez and Misa families—threw its support behind the 81-year-old Andrada and left out business tycoon Jean Henri Lhuillier in the cold.
“They didn’t get embarrassed when they did that to somebody like Mr. Lhuillier who is a genuine lover of tennis,” said Ramirez, noting that Andrada’s faction likewise practices extreme favoritism with the exclusion of Marian Capadocia in the national pool.
Capadocia, whose parents are at odds with Philta officials, has been continuously campaigning overseas.
