Malacañang and Philippine National Police (PNP) waylaid their higher seeded rivals and forced a rubber match in their respective semis series in the 5th UNTV Cup held over the weekend at the Pasig City Sports Center.
Drawing big game from Eric dela Cuesta, the Malacanang Kamao demolished the top seeded Bureau of Customs Transformers, 99-88, in the opener of their best-of-three series that saw former PBA MVP Kenneth Duremdes foul out early.
“Sobrang higpit sa amin, maaga pa lang foul trouble na ako,” fumed the playing coach of BoC who tallied only 10 points – a far cry from usual 19 points per contest average.
In his best game so far, Dela Cuesta scored the bulk of his game-high 34 points in the first quarter that gave them a 34-13 lead which the Kamao valiantly protected to beat the Transformers for the first time in two meetings.
Dela Cuesta was ably supported by former University of Santo Tomas player Christian Luanzon and Visnu Das Javier who chipped in 22 each in the tournament organized by UNTV for public servants.
Ex-Adamson stars Gherard Ejercito and Marlou Aquino paced Customs with 26 and 24 points, respectively.
The PNP Responders also used a torrid start to maul the Judiciary Magis, 92-67, in their own series.
The knock out matches of the tournament offering P4 million to the charity of the champion team are set on Sunday.
The runner-up will get P2 million which it will also donate to its charity third P1 million and fourth P500,000.
