The stars of yesteryears have been tapped by the Philippine Sports Commission to lend a hand to the agency’s grassroots program.
Atlanta Olympics silver medalist Onyok Velasco and two-time Olympian Elma Muros (1984 Los Angeles and 1996 Atlanta) are among the luminaries signed up by PSC chairman William ‘Butch’ Ramirez, whose sports institute aims to discover talent from the countryside.
Velasco and Muros were in attendance when the PSC made a presentation to prospective coordinators from around the country at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.
Immediately, Velasco and Muros expressed their willingness to help Ramirez.
“Boxing has everything,” said Velasco. “What I can do is make sure that military athletes get their DS (Detailed Service) as quick as possible.”
“I have always wanted to go down to the grassroots level and the sports institute of the PSC is the way to go,” Muros, who won 15 SEA Games gold medals, said for her part.
