Sen. Leila M. de Lima will be given fair treatment and adequate security following her arrest for alleged involvement in the illegal drugs trade at the New Bilibid Prisons in Muntinlupa City, Malacañang said yesterday.
Presidential spokesman Ernesto Abella assured that De Lima will have her day in court, dispelling allegations of political persecution of the critic of President Duterte’s war on illegal drugs.
“The Muntinlupa RTC has now acted on the case of Sen. Leila de Lima. The senator will be treated with fairness and accorded due process. She will have the opportunity to defend herself and prove her innocence,” Abella said in a statement.
“The court has established probable cause therefore, let us keep our faith in the judicial system. The moral arc is long but it always bends towards justice,” he said.
Abella also said De Lima has “nothing to fear in her place of detention.”
De Lima, who was arrested upon the order of a Muntinlupa Regional Trial Court, will be temporarily detained at the Philippine National Police Custodial Center in Camp Crame, Quezon City. (Genalyn D. Kabiling)
