A lady lawmaker has filed a bill seeking to provide mandatory housing units for homeless public school teachers.
Under House Bill 4281, A-Teachers party-list Rep. Juliet Cortuna tasks the Department of Education to supervise the implementation of a “Pabahay Program for Homeless Public School Teachers.”
“Teachers generally view their profession as noble. They shape the young minds of girls and boys to prepare them for the future and become the catalysts for national development,” Cortuna said.
“Ironically, most teachers in the public school system do not even own, much less, pay for a housing unit for their own families,” she laments.
Cortuna reminded that under Section 9 of Article 12 of the Constitution, the State, shall, by the law and for the common good, undertake, in cooperation with the private sector, a continuing program of urban land reform and housing which will make available at affordable cost decent housing and basic services to underprivileged and homeless citizens in urban centers and resettlement areas.
