Arellano University swept all the medals in 1500 meters yesterday to crown itself seniors champion for the second straight year in the 92nd NCAA track and field competition at the Philsports Complex in Pasig City.
Joe Marie Arevalo snared the 1500m gold while teammates Immanuel Camino and Christian Traje claimed the silver and bronze medals, respectively, to cap the Chiefs’ domination of the centerpiece event.
Another Arellano U bet Norberto Cailao finished fourth.
It was the icing on the cake for Arellano U as it amassed a total of 740 points, beating Mapua and St. Benilde, which ended up second and third places with 537.5 and 407.5 points, respectively.
Jose Rizal U, the four-peat champion before Arellano U unseated it last year, finished No. 4 with 334 points and Perpetual Help No. 5 with 311.5 points.
Jose Marie Arevalo also won in the 800m to help Arellano U’s bid.
It was Arellano U fourth title this season after it also reigned supreme in juniors lawn tennis, women’s badminton and volleyball.
“This is a victory of the whole Arellano U community and we’re proud of their accomplishments,” said Peter Cayco, Arellano U’s representative to the league’s Management Committee.
Perpetual Help’s Francis Medina, for his part, emerged as the most bemedalled athlete with wins in 400m, 110m hurdles, 400m hurdles and 4x400m relay.
Medina also shattered records in the 110m and 400m hurdles to underscore his amazing performance.
In juniors’ action, Emilio Aguinaldo likewise topped its division for the second straight year after accumulating 641.5 points, besting San Beda’s 578 and San Sebastian’s 469 points.
Veruel Verdadero powered the Brigadiers to the win while emerging the most outstanding athlete in his class following victories in 100m, 200m, 400m, 4x100m and 4x100m while eclipsing marks in 400m and 4x100m.
