The suspect in killing of an information technology professional in a road rage incident in Quezon City last Saturday was spotted in Boracay, Aklan, police said Thursday.
Fredison “Sonson” Atienza, tagged in the February 25 road rage killing of Anthony Mendoza, reportedly sought refuge in a resort in Boracay after the shooting incident over the weekend.
Quezon City Police District (QCPD) director Chief Supt. Guillermo Eleazar disclosed the information as he appealed to the public to help them arrest Atienza. He ruled out the possibility that the suspect might surrender soon.
Eleazar said that they are now coordinating with Malay, Aklan police, adding that a team from QCPD is also in the area where Atienza was reportedly sighted.
The QC police chief said they confirmed Atienza’s whereabouts from Senior Inspector Jess Baylon, commander of Boracay Tourist Assistance Center, who told them that the suspect had checked in a resort in Boracay on Sunday.
Investigators have obtained flight details of the suspect showing that he booked a 12:25 p.m. flight from Manila to Caticlan last February 26, a day after he shot Mendoza dead.
Atienza arrived in Caticlan at 1:10 p.m. and stayed in a resort until Monday.
Eleazar said the gunman, whom he described as a “high roller poker player,” was supposed to return to Manila Wednesday afternoon but did not show up.
They later learned that he also ditched an emergency flight from Caticlan to Clark in Angeles, Pampanga, which he booked February 28.
Eleazar believed that Atienza is still in Boracay and hoped to arrest him soon.
He again urged the suspect to surrender peacefully so as “not put himself at risk.” (VANNE ELAINE P. TERRAZOLA)
