• 1968 – Joe Frazier wins the vacant New York world heavyweight title with an 11th-round TKO of Buster Mathis at Madison Square Garden.
• 1984 – Pee Wee Reese & Rick Ferrell elected to Baseball’s Hall of Fame.
• 1990 – Hank Gathers, one of two Division I players to lead the nation in scoring and rebounding in the same season, dies after collapsing during Loyola Marymount’s West Coast Conference tournament game against Portland. He was 23.
• 1994 – Michael Jordan bounces out to Texas pitcher Darren Oliver in his first at bat in spring training.
• 1995 – It was on this day in 1995 that George Foreman was stripped of his WBA Championship belt. Foreman’s title was taken away after he refused to fight the World Boxing Associations’ number one contender, Tony Tucker.
